"That's no job for a girl!"
"That's a boy's job."
"Why would you want to do that?"
Sound familiar?
Some people believe that men and women, boys and girls, are more suited to certain jobs. They think that gender (whether you're a man or a woman) might affect opportunities in your working life, and limit your options.
Mechanic (Auto Technician), Engineer, Park Ranger - do these sound like jobs for guys to you?
How about Hairdresser, Childcare Worker or Librarian - jobs for the girls?
Anyone, male or female, can do these and other jobs. It's a matter of keeping your mind open to all opportunities. It's about finding your passion and following it. It's about doing what you want to do.
When you're trying to decide what you want to do, make sure you consider all of your options and you'll make the best choice.
If you want to work with kids and you're considering being a child care worker or a teacher - that's great. There's nothing wrong with doing what some people may label a typically female job - as long as you're doing it for the right reasons. It's all about following your passions, not doing something because someone wants to put you in a box, or it hasn't occurred to you that you could do something else.
Same goes if you have an interest in cars and you want to be a mechanic - go for it! You may come across some people who think it's a bad idea, but if you really want to do it - don't let ANYONE stop you. Its your life, and you need to live it.
Explore your options. Whether you're in Year 9 or 10 and thinking of leaving school, or you're heading towards your HSC, or you have already left school and are looking for a change or new job or career path, you'll be surprised by the range of options that are open to you. When you know what's out there, it's just a matter of making smart choices, because the choices you make now are really important.
This website is all about helping YOU make the right choices for yourself.
